The School of Performing Arts and Cinema overlaps several academic disciplines. Here are the core departments and college that make up our program:
Department of Music
Music at Virginia Tech has two equally important educational missions, training our students at the undergraduate and graduate level and encouraging the musical talents and interests of the entire Virginia Tech campus.
The Department of Music offers everything an aspiring performing musician and music educator needs to succeed in the twenty-first century. Degree programs include music performance, composition, education, and technology. Students study with distinguished performers, composers, and scholars, and attend performances given by internationally known artists. The department features a variety of performance opportunities including orchestra, bands, and choirs. Our graduates are regularly accepted into the finest graduate programs in music, perform professionally throughout the United States, and include some of the finest educators in the Commonwealth of Virginia and mid-Atlantic region.
Music at Virginia Tech presents over 125 concerts per year, from guest recitals to symphony performances, chamber music to concert choirs. Guest performers and faculty participate in four established music series throughout the year; in addition, student ensembles have active performance schedules that include practically every style and period of music.

Department of Theatre & Cinema
The Department of Theatre and Cinema at Virginia Tech is a highly successful and innovative theatre program rooted in the liberal arts tradition with a mission to educate and train students in and about theatre and cinema.
In the Department of Theatre and Cinema you will immerse yourself in a curriculum that focuses on collaborative teaching and learning. With our commitment to new works and re-imagining the classics we are actively inventing the future of the theatre. The department produces between 12 and 20 productions every year in three different theatres, providing abundant opportunities for student engagement in the work at all levels. The theatre program at Virginia Tech has achieved national recognition for its training and for the quality of its productions. With our extensive ties to the professional and commercial theatre worlds, our graduates are our best testament to the fact that Virginia Tech is a jewel of a theatre program which has an outstanding national reputation for excellence!
The cinema program offers a sequence of study that integrates theory, history and criticism with production. Led by internationally recognized specialists in cinema, students make their own films, engage with the community through cinema projects, and study cinema in its historical and cultural contexts. Graduates of the program go on to work in the film industry or to pursue cinema study at prestigious graduate programs.
A Bachelor of Arts (BA) degree and a Master of Fine Arts (MFA) degree are offered. In both programs, students have the benefits of a small, close-knit department within the environment of a comprehensive university. A full schedule of stage productions is integral to the work of the department and provides cultural opportunities for the entire community.
